Green School Initiative

Empowering the Next Generation through Sustainability and Innovation

The Green School Initiative (GSI) by Twahirwa Foundation transforms Rwandan schools into hubs for climate resilience, food security, and environmental sustainability. The project empowers students through hands-on green practices such as vertical gardening, composting, clean energy use, and tree planting. Its goal is to raise green leaders while improving school nutrition, reducing waste, and creating green jobs. Key activities include installing vertical gardens, composting systems, clean energy solutions, and integrating climate-smart content into school curricula.

Program Goal

To create learning environments that model climate resilience and environmental responsibility by integrating sustainable infrastructure, practices, and education into the daily life of schools.

Target Audience

Primary and secondary schools, especially in climate-vulnerable or underserved areas. School administrators, teachers, and students. Local education authorities and parent-teacher associations.
