Expanding Green Cover in Urban Spaces
Urban areas across Africa and beyond are facing increasing environmental stress due to rapid urbanization, deforestation, pollution, and the urban heat island effect. The “Expanding Green Cover in Urban Spaces” initiative is a comprehensive program designed to restore ecological balance and strengthen climate resilience in cities through the strategic planting of trees, the development of food forests, and the establishment of community orchards.
Program Goal
At its core, the program aims to increase the density and diversity of vegetation in urban environments by integrating trees into streetscapes, public parks, schools, and underutilized land.
Program Participants
The program involves active participation from urban residents, schools, youth, and local government agencies. Community mobilization, education, and training are key components.
This program is a response to both environmental degradation and social inequality in urban spaces. By greening cities with purpose—integrating food systems, community empowerment, and ecosystem restoration—it seeks to create healthier, cooler, and more self-reliant urban communities that are equipped to face the challenges of climate change. In the long term, the program contributes to improved public health, increased biodiversity, stronger community bonds, reduced food insecurity, and a greener, more resilient urban future.
